a tribute to

LYNYRD SKYNYRD'S

LEON WILKESON

Leon Wilkeson died of natural causes in Jacksonville, Florida on July 27th

Leon joined Skynyrd during the Muschle Shoals Sessions in 1971.   Unsure of himself, Leon bolted from the band in 1972 after Skynyrd signed on with Al Kooper to record their first album.   He returned shortly thereafter and had been THE bassist throughout  the entire Lynyrd Skynyrd career.

When I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd several years ago I was flat out awed at the ability of Leon Wilkeson.  Being a bass player, I was especially blown away at the quiet yet allmighty stage presence of Leon's.   He made no fewer than 5 'headwear' changes, his trademark for years!
